Most homes run on single-phase power — plenty for lighting, appliances and general power. Farm sheds are a different story once you start running irrigation pumps, grain augers, workshop equipment or a coolroom compressor: that's where three-phase power earns its keep.

What three-phase actually gives you

Three-phase supplies power across three alternating currents instead of one, which lets motors start smoother and run more efficiently under load. For anything with a decent-sized motor — pumps, compressors, augers, workshop machinery — that difference matters, both for the equipment's lifespan and for what it costs to run.

What's involved in getting it connected

  • Checking what's already available at the meter and whether the supply authority needs to upgrade it
  • Running submains from the main switchboard out to the shed
  • Installing a shed switchboard sized for what you're actually going to run
  • Safety switches and circuit protection sized to the equipment
