5 signs your switchboard is overdue for an upgrade

Your switchboard is the one point everything in the property runs through — every circuit, every safety switch, every fuse. In a lot of older homes and farm sheds across the region, it hasn't been touched since the place was built. That's usually fine, right up until it isn't.

What to look for

• Rewireable fuses (the old ceramic kind with fuse wire) instead of modern circuit breakers.
• No safety switches (RCDs) — these protect people from shock, not just wiring from overload.
• Scorch marks, a burning smell, or a board that feels warm to touch.
• Circuits tripping for no obvious reason, or lights flickering when other appliances kick in.
• You're adding solar, an EV charger, air conditioning or another coolroom and the board's already maxed out.
